Giulia Scalas is a postdoctoral fellow in the Medicine and Philosophy programme at the Centre Léon Robin.
She obtained her PhD in Ancient Philosophy in March 2019 at the University of Lille, with a thesis entitled "The soul with the body: the Epicurean theory of the living in dialogue with Aristotle", developed under the direction of Thomas Bénatouïl.
Her thesis offers a fresh reconstruction of Epicurean doctrines concerning the generation and psychophysiological functioning of the living (of which Lucretius is the main witness), as well as an investigation of the role previous philosophers and physicians played in their development (Democritus, Leucippus, Hippocrates and the Hippocratics, Aristotle and Theophrastus especially).
A revised version of the thesis will be soon published as a monograph by Classique Garnier (2022) in the collection "Les Anciens et les Modernes - Études de Philosophie".
More generally, Giulia Scalas’ research interests include psychology and physiology in atomistic theories, Aristotle, the Peripatetics and medical doctrines (in particular the Hippocratic Collection and Asclepiades of Bithynia). She also works on the reception of Epicureanism in the modern period, in particular in Gassendi, Locke and Kant.
Currently, she is working on the thought of the physician Archigenes of Apamea and pneumatic theories. Her project belongs to the Medical and Philosophical Physiologies Project (5th ct. BC - 5th century AD), organised by the multidisciplinary network Sciences of Antiquity.
