Former President of the Società Italiana di Storia della Filosofia Antica (SISFA).
His research focuses mainly on Aristotle: ethics, metaphysics, rhetoric. He studied the history and organisation of ancient philosophical schools, Xenophon, the ancient debate on causality and determinism, the relationship between Aristotle’s theory of science and his ethics.
He has published a book on Aristotle's theology (L'Aquila 1974), another one on his conception of practical wisdom (Napoli 1989, II ed. New York 2001), a third one on Aristotle's life and the organisation of his school (Bologna 1991, II ed. Princeton 2013); after that, a book on Aristotle's theory of action (Louvain-la-Neuve 2004), a general presentation of Aristotle's philosophy (Rome 2014), and lastly a book on the method of the Nicomachean Ethics (Rome 2017).
He has translated in Italian with notes Xenophon’s Oeconimicus, (Venice 1988, IInd ed. Rome 2003); Alexander of Aphrodisias’ De fato (Milan 1996, IInd ed. Sankt Augustin 2009) and Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, (Roma-Bari 1999, many reprints).
He has also edited the proceedings of a Symposium Aristotelicum on Nicomachean Ethics VII (Oxford 2009), and, with Gaia Bagnati, a “Bibliography on Aristotle” for the website Oxford Bibliographies in Classics (forthcoming).

Ancien professeur en Histoire de la Philosophie Antique à l'Université Ca' Foscari de Venise, il a été Visting Scholar, Clare Hall (Cambridge) ; Faculty Fellow, Institute for Advanced Studies (Edinburgh) ; Visiting Fellow, All Souls College (Oxford) ; il a tenu la chaire "Topicos" à l'Université Panamericana (Mexico City).
Il est co-directeur des collections "International Studies in Aristotle" (Nomos Verlag) et “Studi di storia della filosofia antica” (Ed. di Storia e Letteratura, Roma).
Il a obtenu le Prix à la Recherche Avancée de Ca’ Foscari et le Prix international “A. Jannone” pour la recherche en Philosophie Antique.
Il a été Président de la Societé Italienne d'Histoire de la Philosophie Antique (SISFA).
Ses recherches portent surtout sur la philosophie d'Aristote : éthique, métaphysique, rhétorique. Il a étudié l'histoire et l'organisation des écoles philosophiques antiques, Xénophon, le débat sur la causalité et le déterminisme dans l'antiquité, le rapport entre théorie de la science et éthique chez Aristote.
Il a publié un livre sur la théologie d'Aristote (L'Aquila 1974), un autre sur sa conception de la sagesse pratique (Naples 1989, II ed. New York 2001), un troisième sur la vie d'Aristote et l'organisation de son école (Bologne 1991, II éd. Princeton 2013) ; ensuite, un livre sur la théorie aristotélicienne de l'action (Louvain-la-Neuve 2004), une présentation générale de la philosophie d'Aristote (Rome 2014), et récemment un livre sur la méthode de l'Éthique à Nicomaque (Rome 2017).
Il a traduit en italien, avec introduction et notes, l'Oeconomique de Xénophon, (Venise 1988, IIe éd. Rome 2003) ; le De fato d'Alexandre d'Aphrodise (Milan 1996, IIe éd. Sankt Augustin 2009) et de l'Éthique à Nicomaque d'Aristote (Rome-Bari 1999, plusieurs réimpressions).
